Early Days
In the early days, Rome was a kingdom where kids did not go to school. Education took place in their homes. Boys were taught how to read, write, become warriors, how to manage a farm and how to behave in society. Boys were taught by someone with the gender of male which we sometimes tutors of you were rich enough. Girls were taught how to run a home and how to be a good wife. They were always by their mothers. |
The Roman's Changed
Soon the government figured out that family's would pay for school. Students worked from sunrise to dawn. At the age of 12 boys went to grammar school. Poor children could not afford to go to school. School was hard. The subjects were math, literature, oration, and public speaking. The students worked with oil lamps and they took 2 breaks, one for lunch, and one for siesta. The goal was to become a Public Speaker. Soon boys spent all of their time working or studying at school. Later Roman's started writing and that became their new goal, to become a writer. Boys younger than 7 did not go to school . Family's started putting a lot of faith into education. The school house had one room and one teacher who taught all grades |
